OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a GPT-6 Astra offering for legal practice that includes a search index covering more than 230 million U.S. legal URLs. The index is updated daily and covers case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions.
The release extends OpenAI’s industry-specific product push into legal work. The company announced ChatGPT for Financial Services on September 11, as Go Big News reported.
Astra for Law combines legal search with tools, settings and context intended for lawyers and legal technology firms. Much of its case-law data comes from the Free Law Project’s CourtListener database.
On Vals AI’s Legal Research Bench, Astra for Law passed the overall correctness check on 54% of 200 questions, compared with 38.7% for GPT-6 Astra using web search alone. On case-law-focused questions, it found 24% more reference cases than GPT-6 Astra using web search alone at the highest reasoning effort.
Latham & Watkins, Sullivan & Cromwell, Ropes & Gray and Cooley are named law firm partners. Latham & Watkins worked as a design partner on permissions and ethical walls. Legal AI companies Harvey and Legora are API customers and launch partners.
Thomson Reuters is integrating Astra for Law into HighQ and CoCounsel. The offering also includes 26 partner-built plugins for tools including Relativity, Clio, iManage and DeepJudge, community plugins from LegalQuants, LECG and Skills.law, and 47 customizable skills.
Astra for Law is available through a Trusted Access program in ChatGPT and Codex for selected firms. Eligible firms receive zero API data retention, while ChatGPT Enterprise use is excluded from human review by default. An API version, gpt-6-astra-law, is planned, but OpenAI has not announced pricing or a timeline.
ChatGPT for Word also reached general availability alongside the launch. OpenAI announced Astra for Law in a post on X.
