Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22 as the first model in its Claude 5.5 family. The company said the model costs 40% less to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads at default settings.
Anthropic said Opus 5.5 performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 for most tasks. The model is available across the company’s platforms, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
The list-price changes include input tokens at $4 per million, down from $5 for Opus 5, and output tokens at $20 per million, down from $25. Cache reads cost $0.20 per million tokens, compared with $0.50 for Opus 5.
Anthropic’s product page puts the output-generation speed gain at more than 30% over Opus 5. A fast mode offers up to 2.5 times the speed, according to the company.
Anthropic said external evaluators, including Frontier Design and METR, tested Opus 5.5 before release. The company also called it the strongest-performing model it has tested on its automated behavioral audit.
The release follows Claude Fable 5.1, which Anthropic launched earlier this month with a 75% cache-read price cut, as Go Big News reported. Anthropic said Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 are expected in the coming weeks with comparable performance and efficiency gains.
