Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke said the company is partnering with Meta’s Muse to enable Shop Pay agentic checkout across all Shopify stores. Meta announced Muse on September 8, 2026, when Shop Pay was listed as “coming soon.”
The arrangement makes Shopify merchants discoverable and purchasable in Muse without individual merchant opt-in, according to secondary reporting. For merchants, it creates another route for product discovery and checkout through an AI assistant rather than a store’s usual shopping path.
Muse is a mobile-based personal AI agent that Meta launched in September 2026. Its stated functions include email, calendars, payments, dining and shopping. The assistant matches shopper prompts with Shopify catalog product data through the Universal Commerce Protocol, which Google and Shopify co-developed, according to reporting on the partnership.
Muse transactions use pre-stored, vetted customer credentials for single purchases and are completed in an in-app browser, rather than through an instant one-click checkout. Shopify VP of Product Rohit Mishra said AI agents can use more context than human shoppers to find products faster.
The announcement did not document merchant controls, fees, attribution methods or return policies for the Muse integration in the same way Shopify has outlined guidance for other AI shopping channels.
The partnership follows Shopify Catalog shopping added to SPECS AR glasses, as Go Big News reported on September 18. Amazon blocked Muse’s shopping agent from its retail site around September 20, shortly before Shopify’s announcement.
Shopify reported $115.6 billion in GMV and about $3.58 billion in revenue for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The company says millions of businesses in more than 175 countries use its platform.
