Etienne Lescot said in a Sept. 8, 2026, post on X that OpenScreen had passed 2,500 GitHub stars, and that the project started again from zero in June after the original repository was archived.
GitHub listed 2,549 stars on the continuation repository as of the same day. The original repository was archived by its owner on June 17, 2026, and is now read-only. It still had 39,912 stars.
The continuation’s README says Siddharth Vaddem created OpenScreen and archived the original repository after version 1.5.0. It says development moved with his approval under the OpenScreen name and MIT license. The archived repository described the new project as a community-led spin-off headed by a core contributor.
Lescot published the continuation’s latest GitHub release, version 1.10.0, on Aug. 24, 2026. GitHub listed 158 forks and 73 open issues for the repository on Sept. 8.
OpenScreen is a free, open-source desktop app for recording a screen and turning the capture into product demonstrations and walkthroughs. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Listed features include microphone and system audio, a webcam overlay, cursor effects, zooms, timeline edits and captions transcribed on the device without an upload. An optional chat-based editing assistant is disabled by default and requires a key supplied by the user.
The project says OpenScreen is free for personal and commercial use, with no paywall or watermark. It exports MP4 and GIF files. Rendering and encoding use Metal on macOS, D3D11 on Windows or Vulkan on Linux, with an automatic CPU fallback.
The MIT license credits Siddharth Vaddem and OpenScreen contributors. The continuation identifies getopenscreen.com as its official website and directs users to download builds only from its official GitHub Releases.
