[VEED](https://veed.io) open-sourced OpenEdit on Sept. 6, 2026, releasing a prompt-driven video editor for coding agents. The repository had 462 GitHub stars that day, according to GitHub data.

The release adds an open-source, agent-driven editing pipeline alongside VEED's AI video creation platform and developer APIs. OpenEdit has no graphical interface or timeline and supports Claude Code, Codex and Gemini.

VEED said in a post on X that the editor can produce motion graphics, captions and hooks from one prompt. The company also said the video attached to the announcement was made with OpenEdit. A VEED [product page](https://www.veed.io/tools/openedit) describes the project as a beta available on GitHub.

Users install the [OpenEdit repository](https://github.com/veedstudio/open-edit) with `npx skills add veedstudio/open-edit`. For a subtitle job, the README says the agent can return an MP4 with burned-in subtitles and open a previewer in one to three minutes. Transcription can run through VEED, local WhisperX or a service supplied by the user.

The editor is licensed under Apache License 2.0, but its optional renderer binary is downloaded separately and is not covered by that license. The renderer is distributed under PolyForm Shield 1.0.0, which VEED says permits commercial use of resulting videos without payment to the company. Chrome can be used as the render backend instead.

OpenEdit supports Apple Silicon Macs and Windows x64 PCs. Intel Macs are not supported, and Linux support is planned. The first version focuses on captions; motion graphics, charts and styling matched to a brandbook can also render, though the README says those features have been tested less and may have rough edges.

Users can provide source files or ask OpenEdit to generate a talking-head clip with VEED Fabric. That option spends credits only after the user approves.

VEED was founded on March 20, 2018, by Sabba Keynejad and Tim Mamedov and is headquartered in London. The company said Sequoia invested $35 million in 2022. In May 2026, VEED said it had more than 10 million users, $50 million in annual recurring revenue and 150 employees.
