# Rooms launches macOS window-layout app

Sara Gordić released Rooms, a macOS app for returning to saved project window arrangements, on September 23. Software-collected metadata, which was not independently observed, recorded 60,936 views, 635 likes and 27 reposts for her launch post on X.

Rooms lets users group the windows for a project into a room, then recall that room by pressing Option-Space and entering its name. The app restores the saved arrangement rather than managing browser tabs.

The launch gives Mac users a free option for separating work across projects while keeping their windows available. Rooms can use Focus, Columns, Grid, Stack or custom layouts, and supports direct room shortcuts with Control-Option-1 through 9, according to its [1.0.0 release](https://github.com/saragordic/rooms/releases/tag/v1.0.0).

The app stores data locally and has no cloud sync, accounts or analytics. It also includes window-snapping shortcuts and can adapt saved arrangements for laptop and external-monitor setups. Hidden windows remain accessible, according to the [Rooms repository](https://github.com/saragordic/rooms).

Rooms is free, open source and MIT-licensed. Its repository showed 196 stars and five forks when opened. It requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later and runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Users can install Rooms through a Homebrew cask or download a ZIP from GitHub Releases. The app needs Accessibility permission. It does not support Spaces or full-screen windows, and warns users when Stage Manager is enabled because it conflicts with window managers.

Gordić describes herself as a San Francisco-based multidisciplinary product designer. Her GitHub profile also lists Window Sweaters, an earlier macOS menu-bar app.
