# GitHub makes GPT-6 Astra generally available in Copilot

[GitHub](https://github.com) on September 4, 2026, made [OpenAI](https://openai.com)’s GPT-6 Astra generally available in GitHub Copilot. The company announced the change in a post on X and in a changelog published the same day. Copilot is GitHub’s assistant for writing, testing, and fixing code.

GitHub’s changelog called GPT-6 Astra OpenAI’s latest general-purpose model. GitHub said the model is "designed for long-horizon, autonomous coding and agentic tasks." In internal testing, the company said, the model lays out a plan, checks work as it proceeds, groups diagnosis with verification, and confirms its own results before it marks a task complete. GitHub said that approach produced stronger performance on long coding jobs and used fewer steps than earlier OpenAI models. The company did not publish the measurements behind those claims.

Copilot Pro+, Copilot Max, Copilot Business, and Copilot Enterprise users can select GPT-6 Astra in the model picker, GitHub said. The changelog lists the picker in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot coding agent, the Copilot app, github.com, GitHub Mobile on iOS and Android, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, and Eclipse. The X post told users they could try the model in the Copilot app, the CLI, or Visual Studio Code. GitHub said the rollout will be gradual and that customers who do not see the model yet should check again later.

Administrators on Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise can manage access to GPT-6 Astra through the model policy in Copilot settings. GitHub said that under its default model enablement rules, new models are turned on automatically unless an administrator has switched off that global default or has disabled this model.

GitHub said GPT-6 Astra is billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing. Copilot documentation lists the model as generally available in the Powerful category. At or below 272,000 input tokens, GitHub prices it at $10 per million input tokens, $1 per million cached input tokens, $12.50 per million cache-write tokens, and $50 per million output tokens. Above that threshold, long-context rates are $20, $2, $25, and $75 per million tokens, respectively. Copilot converts token charges into GitHub AI credits, and one credit equals $0.01.
